Cropped because tumblr thumbnail makes the actual size look tiny otherwise.
They look way too happy considering they’re in the middle of a war, right. Also those fancy clothes are to confuse (read: dazzle) the enemies. All part of their strategy, you see. (I’m sorry ;;;;)
Nearly the entire point of this whole thing. Sparkly, magical, golden eyes.
I think I spent an embarrassing amount of time getting the lips to look right. It’s still not right but one has to draw the line eventually. Also, fancy scarf was a gift from Arthur.
Fire-magic should probably look like actual fire, right? I tried. Had lots of failed attempts that just didn’t do it. In the end, I just went with abstract sparkles and swirls (aka I gave up).
The effect kind of reminds me of Merlin’s ember-fire-dragon trick…. so… I suppose that works?
Arthur’s first draft looked SO wonky. But I think I like how he turned out more than Merlin in the end? He had more of a cheeky expression at first – that was somehow lost during all the repaints…
Heavily referenced Excalibur, though I couldn’t help but fancy it up a bit (someone stop me I am out of control! Also the handle patterns don’t match;; ). Arthur has the shiniest armour in the land.
Pendragon crest b/c it needs to be there somewhere. I wanted one on Merlin as well but there was really nowhere to place it, he had so much stuff on him already 😀
“Maybe you should back off a little, sire. Wouldn’t want to singe that perfect golden mane of yours…”
“Why, Merlin, I had no idea you have such a fixation with my hair. Perhaps you ought to direct your attention to the archers over there though, they seem to be aiming for your head.”
In case tumblr is being weird with the resolution, please head over to my deviantart for the bigger picture. Additional rambling placed under the cut because I don’t want to be obnoxious. xD
